The Entourage Effect

The entourage effect is a theory that suggests that the various compounds found in the cannabis plant, such as cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, work together synergistically, and that the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

The entourage effect describes the synergistic interaction between various compounds in cannabis, including cannabinoids like THC and CBD, terpenes and other phytochemicals. When they work together, enhancing each other’s effects, it can result in a more pronounced physiological response. The entourage effect implies that whole-plant extracts or full-spectrum products may potentially offer superior therapeutic effects compared to isolated cannabinoids, emphasising the advantages of preserving the cannabis plant’s natural composition for medicinal applications.

In a 2010 study, patients with pain related to cancer were given either pure THC extract or an extract containing similar levels of THC and CBD. Those who received both THC and CBD reported lower pain than those with plain THC.

Benefits of the Entourage Effect

Enhanced Therapeutic Effects: The combined action of cannabinoids and terpenes can amplify the therapeutic potential of cannabis.

Nuanced Responses: The interaction between different compounds can lead to more specific and tailored physiological effects.

Whole-Plant Advantage: Full-spectrum products that preserve the natural balance of cannabis compounds may offer superior benefits compared to isolated cannabinoids.
